William Furlsbury Carter, the great, great grandfather of Richard Velsa Gray, was an early convert to the LDS Church, three months following the baptism of his mother. His first wife,
Sarah York, is the great, great grandmother of Richard Gray.
After settling with the saints first in Kirtland, then in Missouri, then in Nauvoo, then in Iowa, he arrived in Salt Lake City in 1850. He settled ultimately in the area of Santaquin, Utah--between Nephi and Provo.
In 1852 he was called to serve a mission in India. He left from the West Coast, sailing from San Francisco and, after facing all both physical and proselyting challenges, he returned home by sailing around Africa and landing on the East Coast, ultimately making a second trek across the plains in a wagon train.
At age 43, the effects of his travel had left him an old man, by appearance. The captain of their wagon train was reluctant to have him along for fear he would be a burden. A young woman, Elizabeth Howard, intervened on his behalf and he was allowed to travel.
A rather complete history exists and can be found here.

Very interesting information....William Furlsbury Carter is my great grandfather through Sally Ann Mecham. Their son, John Edward, is my grandfather, and his son, Myron, is my father. I have visited the grave of William in the Santaquin Cemetery. My father is buried at Springville Evergreen cemetery and my grandfather Carter is in the Spanish Fork Cemetery. Thanks for all the information.

Lisa,
I am the niece of your great grandmother Ella and the cousin of your grandmother Eleanor. I really loved Ella - she was one of my favorite aunts. I was really sad when she and Clarence moved out west. She was the family photographer and every birthday, I had my picture taken with her. I didn't get to know your grandmother Eleanor as well as I would have liked, as she was one of, if not the oldest, cousin in a large family and I was the youngest (tell your grandma that I'm Laura's yougest.) I enjoyed playing with Michael and Lonnie when they did visit us in North Dakota. I have been curious lately about family history, too and was excitied to see the names mentioned in your comments. I have a second cousin (Ella's sister and my other favorite aunt Grace's grandson) that was interested in the family geneology and I will try to look him up. Last I heard, he was a writer for a newspaper in Iowa. I'll let you know if I find out anything more as I hope you will, too. One thing I would like to know is where in England the family came from. Grandma Gray was Bohemian (Czech)and quite the character, but I would like to know the place of origin of the Grsay side.
Take care and give your Grandma my best wishes.
